Theatrical headshots, explained

What makes a headshot theatrical?

Theatrical headshots lean on stillness and weight rather than a big smile: low-key light, a closed or barely open mouth, and an expression that suggests the parts you go up for. They are cropped close from the shoulders up, because casting sees them first as small thumbnails.

How many looks can I do in 90 minutes?

Up to three. A look is a change of top and, if you want, hair. Three gives your agent a range: one grounded and neutral, one with more edge, and one warmer alternative. You choose which three images are retouched from the full gallery.

Are theatrical headshots Spotlight-ready?

Yes. The retouched files are well above Spotlight's minimum of 500 by 500 pixels and inside its 1MB to 40MB limit, with no watermark or border. See the Spotlight headshots page for exactly what Spotlight asks for.

Theatrical or commercial: which do I need?

If most of your castings are stage and drama, start with theatrical. If you mostly go up for TV adverts, presenting or brand work, commercial suits you better. Many actors keep one of each; you can cover both moods in one theatrical session by using your third look for a warmer image.

What should I wear?

Bring three or four tops with different necklines in solid mid-tones, plus one layer such as a knit or jacket. Avoid logos, busy patterns and pure white. Wear what you would wear to a recall, not a party.

Should I smile?

We shoot both. Theatrical selects tend to be closed-mouth, but a warmer alternative is always useful for your agent, so expect a mix across the session.

How much retouching do you do?

Light. Temporary marks and stray hairs go; skin texture, scars and character stay. Casting needs to recognise you when you walk in.

When do I get my photos?

Your private gallery opens on lemon.gallery within 48 hours of the shoot. You heart your favourites, press Selection done, and your three retouched images follow.
